Bar sales down 7% in August

General retail sales volumes fell in August by 3.6 per cent compared with the same month in 2010 and a monthly decrease in sales volumes of 0.4 per cent was recorded, according to the CSO’s preliminary estimates.

Retail sales values were also down 3.1 per cent in August compared to 2010 with a month-on-month decrease of 0.8 per cent.

According to the preliminary estimates, bar sales volumes were down 7.1 per cent in August compared to the same month in 2010 and they were down 4.9 per cent compared to July 2011, according to the CSO’s seasonally adjusted Retail Sales Index.

Sales values in bars were down 7.3 per cent in August 2011 compared to the same month in 2010 and they were down 5.0 per cent compared to July 2011.

Final figures for July indicate that bar sales volumes fell 1.2 per cent compared to July last year, but they were up 3.0 per cent on the previous month, June 2011.

Bar sales values were also up 2.8 per cent on June but fell by 1.4 per cent when compared with July 2010.

Over the three months June to August, bar sales volumes showed an estimated  decrease of 5.0 per cent compared to the same three-month period in 2010 but an increase of 0.7 per cent on the previous three-month period this year.

Bar sales values during this period fell by 5.1 per cent compared to 2010 but they rose by 0.5 per cent when set against the previous three-month period this year.
