1. Relaxation of cap on shop sizes may attract international retail giants

New retail planning guidelines published last week will allow larger supermarkets to set up shop in Dublin and larger cities. The Irish Times reports the size of large-scale supermarkets can now be increased from 3,500sq m to 4,000sq m in the four Dublin local authority areas. Retail caps for the cities of Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick/Shannon can be increased from 3,000sq m to 3,500sq m. The maximum allowable floorspace in the rest of the State stays at 3,000sq m.

2. Cully & Sully acquired by New York organic food group

Cully & Sully has been bought by Hain Celestial, an organic food products group with headquarters in New York, for an undisclosed amount. The Irish Times reports that founders Cullen Allen and Colum O’Sullivan will continue to manage all aspects of the Cork-based business which they established in 2004. Allen said the deal would enable the company to grow its presence in foreign markets, including Britain and the US.

3. Strike ends at Musgrave

A strike by 100 workers at Musgrave’s Cork Chill warehouse was called off on Friday night following talks between Siptu and Musgrave’s management. The Irish Examiner reports workers at the warehouse went on strike on 18 April, following a dispute involving promised wage increases, issues with rostering and the introduction of voice technology. However Siptu said they had since "worked out a formula acceptable to both parties".

4. Procter & Gamble’s Irish unit returns to profit

The main Irish arm of consumer products group Procter & Gamble swung back into profit last year after revenues increased by 69% to €90.3m. The Irish Examiner reports that accounts filed by the group show it achieved pre-tax profits of €5.5m after recording a loss of €4.5m in 2010 – a positive swing of €10m. This followed the firm increasing its revenues by 69% from €53.3m to €90.3m in the 12 months to the end of June 2011.

5. Two firms sign €3m deal to supply uniforms for SuperValu and Centra

Two Cork companies have won a €3m contract to provide uniforms to 30,000 SuperValu and Centra employees over the next three years. The Irish Examiner reports Trag Limited and Coppinger Limited signed a contract with Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland that will see the two companies taking on additional staff to meet Musgrave’s demands. Musgrave said it was committed to supporting Irish companies, and was therefore delighted to sign off on the deal.
