Coca-Cola is a global leader in environmental awareness and sustainability efforts, with its Irish and Northern Irish operations on their way to achieving their 202 goals, the company has said. The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices was launched in 1999 as a benchmark, tracking the stock performance of global companies in terms of economic, social and environmental criteria. It serves as a benchmark for investors who integrate these considerations into their portfolios.
The Coca-Cola company achieved a total score of 90 in the index – 38 higher than the industry average.
Some of the improvements the company has made in recent years include a 3% reduction in the amount of water used in manufacturing a litre of the beverage. The energy use ratio also declined, as did the amount of total packaging placed onto the marketplace for recycling.
Among the 28 countries in the group, Coca-Cola’s Irish and Northern Irish operations showed a strong track record on all of these areas, and both are on track to achieve their 2020 commitments in water, waste and energy reduction.
Matthieu Seguin, general manager of Coca-Cola in Ireland and Northern Ireland, said that sustainability has been at the heart of the business. “We hold ourselves accountable to deliver against an ambitious set of targets,” he said. “An important part of our sustainability agenda is our commitment to minimise our impact on the environment, and we are very proud that our achievements have contributed to the group’s goals.”
