Tesco Ireland has won three gold medals at the Gradaim Gnó na hEireann awards, which recognises the use of Irish language in business in Ireland.

Re-opened in October 2022, Tesco Indreabhán (Siopa an Phobail), is managed by Majella Ní Chonghaile, whose local team is made up of native speakers and remains the first Tesco to operate as Gaeilge. The business was awarded for its use of the Irish language through signage, branding and marketing, and Irish language customer services.

Gradaim is a recognition scheme for businesses that use Irish as part of their business, or that provides a service through Irish to their customers. The awards are presented to businesses for their efforts to the use of Irish in three main categories, namely signage, branding and marketing as well as Irish language customer & client service. This recognition from Gradaim will inform the public that the business has achieved a certain standard in these areas.

This is the second year of the national recognition scheme Gradaim Gnó na hÉireann, managed by Glór na nGael, who receive support from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media and from Foras na Gaeilge.

Majella Ní Chonghaile, Tesco Ireland, said: “This is a brilliant day for the team and I based in Indreabhán. We’re really proud to not only be the first Tesco in the Gaeltacht in Ireland but to get three gold medals for our Irish language strengths is amazing. We opened just over one year ago, and the customer feedback is brilliant; they’ve embraced the brand; the brand has embraced the language and the colleagues they know, love and speak the same language, are at the centre of our business.”
