BWG Foods was recently presented with the 2024 SEAI Energy Award for Transport.

BWG Foods’ Logistics Division was recognised for exemplary performance and innovation in low emissions transport based around its extensive Transport Decarbonisation Project, which delivered a superior sustainable distribution operation in servicing its nationwide network of Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL convenience stores and supermarkets.

BWG was lauded for introducing Compressed Nation Gas (CNG) and biogas vehicles, providing a 90% CO2 reduction, to its fleet.

A number of Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel alternatives have also been added to its fleet, providing a 70% CO2 reduction. BWG Foods also introduced the very first articulated electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in Ireland.

Sophisticated and effective

Joanne Mellon, logistics director, BWG Foods, highlighted that BWG Foods has the most “sophisticated and effective” distribution operations possible.

“We are committed to serving our more than 1,000 nationwide network of retailers in the most sustainable way possible,” she said.

“The transition to sustainable logistics solutions requires us all to work together and evolve how we approach order placement, delivery times and volumes for the benefit of the environment.

We are delighted to receive this award as another strong endorsement of our sophisticated logistics and supply chain management model which provides our teams and retailers with efficient, sustainable and innovative solutions to better serve customers and communities around the country.”

BWG has a creditable reputation for implementing various alternative fuels, consolidating loads, creating customised route plans, as well as the use of eco-efficient technologies in its implementation of more sustainable practices and is recognised as a leader in eco-friendly logistics.

BWG Foods nationwide operation is powered by a growing and sophisticated team of over 1,650 people, expanding to 22,000 people across Ireland through BWG’s branded retail estate, in partnership with independent retailers.
