A new and exclusive Portuguese Wine Collection is now on sale in Carry Out, having been launched last week at the Portuguese ambassador’s residence in Dublin.
Portugal’s potential is now being realised as a leading wine producer, and the quality and variety on offer is impressive, according to Carry Out’s wine buyer, Gary Ring.
The star buy in the new wine collection is Herdade Sao Miguel, a beautiful red with very ripe mulberry, raspberry and plum fruits integrated with spicy, balmy notes of pepper, mint and coconut. On promotion for the launch at half price, just €14.99, this award-winning fruity red is a smooth and elegant wine for any occasion.
For those who like oak-aged layered complexity in their red wine, another remarkable Carry Out Portuguese red is the Quinta Aciprestes Douro, a stunning red from the oldest demarcated wine region in Europe, the Douro valley. Smooth flavoursome plum and cherry are supported with classic vanilla notes for a rich mellow wine which, at 33% off, only €16.99, is too good not to stock up on.
Fans of white wine should try the Alvarinho Morgado Da Villa, one of the world’s most surprising whites, and a great trade-up from Sauvignon Blanc. Grapefruit and apple merge with tropical notes of orange and lychee, and at €14.99, on promotional discount of 33%, this Alvarinho grape great is one to watch, and definitely drink.
Carry Out’s Alvarinho is a sibling to a delicious Vinho Verde which also features in the exclusive new collection at just €11.99. A delicious young fresh crisp wine, Portugal’s famous ‘green wine’ is like a subtle blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, and, at just 10.5% alcohol, is a fantastic summer lunch option.
Ciconia white and red options, at €12.99, are also perfect examples of rich and elegant fine wines that encapsulate Portugal’s modern classy winemaking. The Rio Dos Patos red and white duo priced at €10.99 each are similarly complex and interesting gems, and real all-rounders for drinking either with food or on their own.
There are over a dozen wines in the new Portuguese wine collection from Carry Out, and June is the month to explore them, with price promotion discounts of between 33% and 50%.
Marking the launch of the Carry Out Portuguese wine promotion in June, a Facebook competition is giving away a wine tour to a Villa Resort in Portugal, including flights, accommodation, and five days of hosted wine tasting.
Growing popularity of Portugese
A growing Irish taste for Portuguese wine possibly reflects greater numbers holidaying in the country, with Portugal’ s tourism board reporting that a 23.4% increase in Irish tourists last year.
In the recent Sommelier Wine Awards, the UK’s only trade-based wine competition, Portugal had the highest medals to entries ratio, taking a total of 95 medals, including 2 Critics’ Choice Trophies, 17 Golds, 31 Silvers, 21 Bronzes, and 26 Commended accolades.
Portugal’s whites, particularly the Vinho Verdes, proved popular with the tasters and the Douro’s reds were another strong winning category. Focused on exclusive wines, all the wines adjudicated are tasted blind, and by category, and the judges include Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine, all of which are involved in either buying or serving wine professionally.
