Aldi has announced a new three-year partnership with Community Games, the state initiative initiative which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. In that time, more than 5m children have participated in a wide range of sporting and cultural activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle as well as team participation and other essential life skills.

Rugby star and Aldi Play Rugby ambassador Paul O’Connell helped to launch the new partnership, recalling his own experiences with Community Games as a schoolboy. “The community spirit and camaraderie of the Games is truly unique,” he said. “It’s not just about winning. For me, the focus was on taking part and on enjoying sports. With swimming, I learned the importance of preparation, determination and dedication, which are values I later applied on the rugby pitch.”

Paul O’Connell came on board as an ambassador for Aldi last September. “Since then,” he said, “I have witnessed first-hand how effective and committed Aldi is to the community support initiatives in which it is involved.”

Also at the launch event, John Byrne, CEO of Community Games said that 2017 is a hugely significant milestone for the organisation. “Our 50th birthday is the beginning of a much-valued partnership with Aldi,” Byrne said. “It’s something we’re are all really excited about.”

Throughout 2017, an estimated 160,000 children across 575 communities are expected to compete in hundreds of events with Community Games. Regional winners will progress to National Festivals in May and August. Some of the sports and activities include Art, model-making, javelin, camogie, football, hurling and more.
