The Hidden Hearth festival in Co Carlow is set to take place from October 11-13, 2024, as Ireland’s first alcohol-free festival.
This three-day event is designed for anyone interested in sobriety, casual drinkers seeking a break, or those who do not consume alcohol.
Founded in 2022, Hidden Hearth began with a gathering of approximately 200 participants. This year, attendance is expected to grow to around 1,000 at Lisnavagh House.
Lively performances
According to the Irish Independent, co-founder Oonagh O’Sullivan noted that last year’s festival featured lively performances, including a memorable show by the band Bog Bodies, all without alcohol.
The festival’s programme includes performances from musicians like Liam Ó Maonlaí and John Spillane, as well as activities such as yoga, storytelling, stand-up comedy, and ‘wild hurling’ with Diarmuid Lyng.
Tickets are priced at €80 for a single day and €175 for the full weekend, with options for camping or local accommodations.
An all-weekend food ticket, which includes eight meals from the community kitchen, costs between €65 and €70.
Authentic experience
This initiative comes at a time when alcohol consumption in Ireland is at its lowest in more than 35 years, according to the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.
Hidden Hearth aims to provide an authentic Irish experience, contrasting with the typical drinking culture often associated with tourism. The festival emphasises meaningful connections and wellness while offering a fun alternative to traditional events.
