The occasion also served to give everyone a taste of their first collaborative microbrewing effort, ‘The Belgian Connection’, a collaboration between JW Sweetman’s Chief Brewer Rob Hopkins and Carlow Brewing Company’s Seamus O’Hara.
Known as ‘gypsy brewing’, this age-old technique combines two craft beers from traditional brewing houses resulting in a unique beer.

In the fashion of ‘pop-up restaurants’, The Belgian Connection is JW Sweetman’s ‘pop-up beer’ and Seamus assures me that this 6% ABV trappist-style beer won’t be around for long so it’s worth getting a taste sooner rather than later.
Now Dublin’s only independently-owned craft brewery bar sprawling over four floors which date back to 1756, the pub rebranded from Messrs Maguire last November.

Since then, owners Barry Cassidy and Colin Dolan have worked with Rob to produce a range of craft beers: ‘Porter’, ‘Irish Red Ale’, ‘Weiss’, ‘Pale Ale’ and ‘Kolsch’.

An award-winning brewer, Rob began his career in 1997 at one of New York’s most popular micro-breweries.

Barry’s a fourth generation publican whose family owned Cassidy’s on Camden Street, Cassidy’s Roost in Maynooth and Cassidy’s in Stillorgan at one time or another. The family also has management contracts with other pubs.
Colin Dolan owns a number of pubs in Dublin such as Flannery’s on Camden Street and Cassidy’s on Westmoreland Street as well as a few in Mullingar including Dolan’s and Canton Casey’s.

JW Sweetman was originally established by the highly-successful Sweetman family who later sold the business to Arthur Guinness & Sons.

It now offers customers a guided microbrewery cellar tour and for €25 consumers can also purchase custom-made ‘Growlers’, available exclusively at JW Sweetman, which store up to four pints – the perfect gift for beer lovers.

As well as a selection of internationally-renowned craft beers from Canada to Japan, customers can also enjoy an exclusive selection of craft beer-infused cocktails such as ‘Sourman’s’, ‘Bitterman’s’, ‘Fruity Sweetman’s’, ‘Redman’s’ and ‘Portman’s’.
Complementing the craft beer offering are specially-created food pairing menus including ‘Bar Bites’ and ‘Knife and Fork’ offerings for daytime and evening dining.
