Retail monitoring group Kantar Worldpanel has published its latest figures for the Irish supermarket sector, which reveal SuperValu as still Ireland’s most popular supermarket. Its sales grew slightly ahead of the average, giving it a 22.5% market share.

Tesco followed closely in the results, holding 21.9% of the Irish grocery market – a drop of 1.9% on its position last year. Dunnes Stores’ strong growth continued, with a sales boost contributing to its 21.3% market share.

Lidl stands in 4th place according to Kantar Worldpanel’s results, with an 11.9% share of the market, while Aldi came in 5th with its 11.1% share.

“Ireland’s involvement with the Euro 2016 tournament looks to have had a positive impact for the major supermarkets,” says Dave Berry, director at Kantar Worldpanel. “Alcohol sales over the past 12 weeks are 11% higher than last year, as consumers stocked up more often and bought more each time they shopped.

“Soft drinks, confectionery, crisps and snacks also saw positive sales growth as football fans made the most of the opportunity to treat themselves,”  Berry added.
