‘Free Breakfast Friday’ will see McDonald’s Restaurants of Ireland give away 40,000 Egg McMuffins for free this Friday, 27 March.

Ireland is a nation of egg lovers, according to research carried out in advance of the promotion, with 62% of people voting eggs their favourite breakfast menu item, ahead of sausages at 20% and bacon at 18%.

The survey also shows almost half of people (49%) have a ‘grab-n-go’ attitude towards breakfast, over a quarter (28%) prefer to ‘sit down and savour’ breakfast and nearly a fifth (19%) say they “devour breakfast with delight”.

Meanwhile, 4% of people skip breakfast altogether and don’t eat a proper meal until lunch.

All 87 McDonald’s outlets across Ireland will participate in Free Breakfast Friday on 27 March. The initiative will offer customers the choice of either a free Bacon & Egg McMuffin or a free Sausage & Egg McMuffin until 10am.

“Over two million eggs were served up in McDonald’s restaurants across Ireland last year and we’re proud of the fact that all our eggs are 100% Irish and free range, sourced from Greenfield Foods in Co Monaghan,” said McDonald’s Ireland MD Adrian Crean. “Free Breakfast Friday is a fun way for us to thank our customers for their loyalty,” he added.

The Telegraph in the UK reported earlier this week that McDonald’s moved to  turnaround a global slump in its fast-food sales by holding a “24 hours of joy” marketing campaign on Tuesday, 24 March.

The one-day advertising campaign across 24 cities came after the company reported its worst sales performance in a decade in January and replaced its chief executive officer Don Thompson with one of his top lieutenants, namely  chief brand officer Steve Easterbrook. It was also the company’s largest global marketing push since its “I’m lovin’ it” campaign in 2004.

The “imlovin24” campaign saw pop star Jessie J host a surprise concert on a double decker bus in London. Philippines drive-thru customers were treated to a free breakfast and Italian customers enjoyed a pyjama party in McDonald’s. In Stockholm the Swedish national ski team put on a fashion show and in Vienna a philharmonic orchestra surprised guests.
