Nearly one in five respondents (18 per cent) to a new travel survey from AA Travel Insurance intend going North before Christmas to purchase goods, mainly alcohol, groceries and gifts.

This indicates a two per cent rise on last year’s poll of 11,500 people.

Interestingly, a significant number of participants would consider more trips of this nature if the two per cent VAT increase goes ahead in January.
