SuperValu may have been knocked off the top spot in Kantar Worldpanel’s supermarket share index, but things are looking rather rosy for SuperValu all the same. The company reached new heights during 2016 with record sales of €2.67bn – an increase of 2.4% on 2015’s figures.

Riding the wave of this success, SuperValu has announced plans to open three new stores in 2017, in total creating 190 new jobs; a further investment of €35m in store revamps is also underway.

“Our latest record performance demonstrates consumers’ positive response to our fresh food leadership and ongoing commitment to innovation,” says Martin Kelleher, SuperValu’s managing director. Kelleher added that the company is the number-one supporter of Ireland’s agri-food industry. “SuperValu sources from more than 2,200 Irish suppliers,” he said, “which is more than any other grocery retailer on the Irish market. In fact, it totals to an annual economic contribution of €2.19bn.

Along with the three new stores, Kelleher said that SuperValu’s innovation agenda would continue through 2017. “We will also invest in new product ranges and services to offer consumers and provide even more ways for customers to save money on their weekly shop.”

Competition is alive and well in the sector, then. With this new drive from SuperValu, will Dunnes Stores hold the top spot when the next set of Kantar Worldpanel figures are released?
