The Irish Payment Services Organisation (IPSO) and gardaí have launched a new poster campaign warning Irish retailers about ongoing ATM fraud due to an increase in incidents being reported.
Both parties are warning retailers that ATMs inside a number of shops and petrol forecourts have been targeted by criminal gangs for card skimming.
The group explains that skimming involves the theft of credit/debit card information used in an otherwise legitimate transaction. It is carried out by placing a magnetic strip on the ATM card slot and can also involve the placement of a micro-camera on the top of the ATM.
To combat skimming in stores, the IPOS recommends that retailers become familiar with their in-store ATMs so changes or alterations become clearly noticeable. Retailers are advised to check for sticky adhesive on the ATM especially around the card slot, to be aware of suspicious activity around the ATM and not to allow unplanned engineers or maintenance staff work on machines. The group stresses that any work to be carried out on machines will be scheduled by the ATM provider. It also suggests that retailers ensure that all staff are educated about this warning and how to notice the signs of card skimming.
If it is suspected an in-store ATM has been tampered with, the IPSO recommends that retailers contact their ATM provider and gardaí immediately.
