The Retail Grocery Dairy & Allied Trades Association (RGDATA) that represented 3,500 independent family owned food and convenience shops at the heart of every Irish community recently told a Retail Forum that weekly wage costs for independent shops is not sustainable.

In a statement the group noted that RGDATA director Padraig Broderick represented independent grocers at the first Retail Forum chaired by new Retail Minister Alan Dillon.

Unsustainable costs

The Croom, Co Limerick shop owner told the Forum the weekly increase in payroll, additional sick leave costs and additional Bank Holiday were costs that a retail business cannot sustain along with all other cost increases associated with running a store.

“Reduce Employers PRSI and VAT on Food To Go, address energy costs and levies and maintain sick pay at the current five days,” Broderick told the Forum.

“We badly need these actions to support businesses, jobs and communities.”
